NSS Annual Convention – K0V Activation

National Speleological Society Convention K0V

Celebrating cave exploration and radio science in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

The W8USR Logbook Entry & Event Overview

On June 12, 2022, station W8USR tracked and logged a successful contact with special event station K0V. This unique operation was organized in direct conjunction with the National Speleological Society (NSS) Annual Convention, running from June 11 through June 17, 2022. Hosted on-site at the Central States Fairgrounds in Rapid City, South Dakota, the activation utilized the 20 and 40-meter HF bands to bridge the gap between global radio amateurs and the cave exploration community.

Station Note: QSL card management for this event was coordinated via dedicated email at kov@nssces.org and managed by Sam Rowe (KG9NG) at 2749 Commercial Avenue, Madison, WI 53704. The W8USR contact was verified electronically via real-time log tracking, and I did not send for a physical QSL card.

About Speleology & the Annual Convention

Speleology is the scientific study of caves and other karst features, encompassing their geology, biology, history, and formation. It is a unique discipline where rigorous scientific research meets rugged physical exploration. Speleologists study everything from unique subterranean ecosystems and delicate mineral formations to underground water systems that are critical to local environments. Beyond the science, speleology also emphasizes "cave conservation," fostering a deep respect for protecting these highly sensitive, non-renewable natural environments from human impact and pollution.

The National Speleological Society (NSS) Annual Convention serves as the premier gathering for this community, bringing together hundreds of scientists, explorers, cartographers, and conservationists from around the world. Held in a different cave-rich region of the United States each year, the convention is a week-long immersion into all things subterranean. Attendees participate in scientific presentations, workshops on vertical rope rescue, and cartography sessions dedicated to mapping newly discovered passages. It functions as both a professional symposium and a community reunion where lifelong explorers share expedition stories and coordinate future survey efforts.

When the convention traveled to Rapid City, South Dakota in mid-June 2022, it placed attendees in the heart of the Black Hills, a region famous for complex, world-class cave systems like Jewel Cave and Wind Cave. It was against this backdrop that special initiatives, such as the K0V amateur radio event, took place. By setting up stations at the convention, radio operators bridged the gap between the surface world and the caving community, highlighting how critical radio communication is for deep underground exploration and wilderness rescue operations.
