Annual Missing Children's Day Event

Event History & Genesis

This event was hosted by The Radio Operators For Missing Children (KB1HGK). The group was formed in response to the abduction of Molly Bish, a 16-year-old high school student, who vanished on the morning of June 27, 2000, after being dropped off at her job as a lifeguard at Comins Pond in Warren, Massachusetts.

After nearly three years, remains and a bathing suit were discovered in Whiskey Hill Woods in nearby Palmer, MA, less than 5 miles from where Molly disappeared. On June 9, 2003, the Worcester County District Attorney's Office announced they had positively identified the remains as those of missing child Molly Bish using DNA testing and other forensic techniques.

The Mission of the Certificates

Starting with this event in 2004, in honor of Molly, the commemorative certificate showed other victims who were found but not identified. It is estimated there are more than 5,000 unidentified individuals listed in the databases of police stations across the U.S. Both NCMEC and the center for missing adults utilize graphic reconstruction techniques to develop these images.
