Groundhog Day On-Air Special Event

Groundhog Day Special Event

The Special Event

The annual Groundhog Day Special Event Station was hosted by the Punxsutawney Area Amateur Radio Club (PAARC). This annual activation is highly anticipated, but the 2002 version was exceptionally unique to the amateur radio community because it created a perfect numerical palindrome: 02/02/02. Hams from around the world attempted to make contact with the station, creating heavy pileups. The rare "triple-two" date sparked immense interest from operators wanting a unique souvenir for their logbooks.

For the event, the club utilized the callsign K3HWJ. Originally, this callsign belonged to Art Sweeney, a long-time ham and dedicated member of the Punxsutawney Area Amateur Radio Club. The on-air operations took place at Gobbler's Knob within the city of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania—the official home of the weather-predicting groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil.

Operating in western Pennsylvania during early February means dealing with freezing, pre-dawn winter conditions. To combat the elements, the club set up a temporary, portable "shack" environment, operating directly out of vehicles, trailers, or park shelters near Gobbler's Knob. The operators planned their activation on or around 7.235 MHz (40 meters) and 14.330 MHz (20 meters) using Single Sideband (SSB).

About the Groundhog Day Celebration

The Groundhog Day celebration at Gobbler's Knob is a massive, high-energy festival that transforms a wooded hilltop outside Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, into a vibrant, all-night party. Up to 35,000 spectators gather in the freezing winter dark to watch a groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil deliver his theatrical weather prediction.

The celebration typically unfolds in precise stages. From midnight to 3:00 AM, eager crowds begin gathering in the town. At 3:00 AM, the gates officially open at Gobbler's Knob. Since no private vehicles are permitted up the hill, a shuttle bus service continuously transports visitors to and from town parking lots. The clearing quickly builds a festive atmosphere functioning like a giant pep rally or concert, featuring live music, dancing, talent performances, and a massive bonfire to help attendees stay warm. A vibrant pre-dawn fireworks show eventually lights up the woods to build anticipation.

At approximately 7:25 AM, the main ceremony begins when the 15 local members of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club walk on stage wearing formal tuxedos and top hats. As dawn breaks, the Inner Circle president approaches a simulated tree stump where Phil sleeps. He taps the stump with a cane to wake the rodent, then lifts Phil onto the stump while pretending to converse with him. According to local folklore, the club president speaks to Phil in a special language known as "Groundhogese."

If Phil sees his shadow, it means there will be six more weeks of winter; if he does not, spring will arrive early. The President acts as though Phil is physically gesturing toward or choosing one of two scrolls hidden inside the stump. He grabs the scroll matching the decision and hands it to the Handler, who makes the official "Declaration" by reading the scroll's rhyming verse aloud to the roaring crowd. The poems themselves are completely unique every year, featuring different rhymes, jokes, and references to current pop culture or local events.
