The Blue Ridge Bonanza Special Event commemorates the historic beginning of construction on the Blue Ridge Parkway in September 1935. Every first Saturday in September, amateur radio stations are deployed along the beautiful 469 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway to establish commemorative contacts. This operational award required successfully making contact with every station activated during the month. All stations are jointly hosted by the Forsyth Amateur Radio Club W4NC (established in 1930) and the Roanoke Valley Amateur Radio Club W4CA (serving Southwestern Virginia since 1932). During the month of September 2008, 12 of the 13 special stations were successfully activated and logged.
